Mount Washington rises above Pittsburgh on the south side of the Monongahela and Ohio rivers, giving it some of the city’s most famous views and helping define the skyline’s image. Known in early years as Coal Hill, it was mined for coal and quarried for stone before becoming celebrated for its panorama by the late nineteenth century. Its steep slope shaped a neighborhood closely tied to German immigrant workers and to the construction of inclines, especially the Monongahela and Duquesne lines, that linked riverfront industries with the hilltop. Later tunnels and a well-known hillside billboard further made it a lasting symbol of Pittsburgh’s industrial, immigrant, and urban history.
