Blues artist Slim Harpo was born James Moore in Lobdell, Louisiana, in February 1924. During the late 1930s and early 1940s he worked as a longshoreman and construction worker, then began performing in Baton Rouge bars as Harmonica Slim. He started his recording career in 1957 with his debut hit single "I'm a King Bee." Producer J.D. Miller gave him the name Slim Harpo and recorded him at his studio in Crowley, Louisiana, for Excello Records. His popular singles included "Rainin' In My Heart" in 1961 and "Baby Scratch My Back" in 1966, both of which reached the top five on Billboard Magazine's R&B charts. His influence extended beyond R&B, and his songs were recorded by the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, Van Morrison, the Yardbirds, the Grateful Dead, Neil Young, and Hank Williams, Jr., among others. "I'm a King Bee" appeared on the first LP released by the Rolling Stones, and "Shake Your Hips" was included on the Stones' all-time best seller "Exile On Main St" CD. Slim Harpo died of a heart attack in 1970 at age 46 and was buried beside his father, Clyde Moore, and mother, Pearl Moore, in Mulatto Bend Cemetery.
