In August 1810, Shawnee Indians led by Tecumseh passed Fort Knox, three miles above Vincennes, in eighty canoes prepared for war, and Captain George Rogers Clark Floyd, commanding at the fort, briefly stopped them and described Tecumseh as the brother of the Prophet and a striking, bold leader before a council with Governor Harrison began at Vincennes. At that council, Tecumseh protested that tribal lands had been taken and warned that continued encroachment would make peace impossible and drive Native people ever farther from their country. Tecumseh and his brother, the Prophet, were Shawnees forced westward by frontier expansion, and they sought to unite Indian tribes against the taking of tribal lands while urging Indians to return to traditional values and reject white ways and trade goods, especially whiskey. Warriors from other tribes soon joined them, and by 1808 they had established Prophet's Town on the Tippecanoe River where it enters the upper Wabash.
