At Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863, at 7:30 a.m., the first shot was fired by Capt. Jones with Serg. Shafer's carbine of Co E, 8th Ill's Cavalry; those associated with it were Capt. Jones, Lieut. Riddler, and Serg. Shafer, and it was erected in 1886.
