During May 7-9, 1864, Dr. Anderson’s House served as the headquarters of Maj. Gen. Joseph B. Hooker, commanding the Federal 20th A.C. After crossing Taylor’s Ridge on May 7, these troops moved east to this vicinity. Williams’ 1st and Butterfield’s 3d divisions camped in Dogwood Valley near Trickum, while Geary’s 2d division camped at the Thornton farm, one mile south. The 20th A.C. occupied the Federal sector between Mill Creek Gap and Villanow during Sherman’s move toward Rocky Face. Demonstrations were made at both Mill Creek Gap and Dug Gap on May 8; at Dug Gap, five miles southeast, Geary made a vain attempt to dislodge the Arkansas and Kentucky defenders while McPherson’s troops occupied Snake Creek Gap.
