Waldo Mountain Fire Lookout
Nature
Waldo Mountain Fire Lookout stands on the summit of Waldo Mountain in Oregon’s Willamette National Forest, where it was built to provide broad views over the surrounding forest. A lookout was first established there in 1926 as a small cabin, replaced in 1929 by a cupola-style structure, and succeeded by the present flat-top building in 1956. Although no longer staffed or used as an active fire lookout, the site remains notable as a hiking destination. It is included in William Sullivan’s 100 Hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades as hike number 90, a difficult 7.9-mile loop with about 2,000 feet of elevation gain.
