During the latter half of the 20th century, Beluthahatchee became a place of literary and musical creation through Stetson Kennedy and his frequent house guest Woody Guthrie, America's legendary folk balladeer who wrote the famous song "This Land is Your Land." While in residence there, Guthrie composed the final draft of his autobiography, "Seeds of Man," and 80 other songs, almost all of them connected to a sense of place and to human rights issues inspired by Kennedy's writing. In 2003, Beluthahatchee was designated a Literary Landmark, number 83 in the National Register, through a nomination by the Florida Center for the Book, the Council of Florida Libraries, and the Friends of Libraries - USA. Kennedy received a life estate on the property from the Florida Community Trust's land acquisition program, and the site consists of four original lots and Kennedy's home.
