Outside the stockade near the fort’s southeast corner, a path ran down to the bottom of the bluff, where two small log buildings were built into the side of the river bank. One stored ice cut from the river in winter, and the other served as a root cellar. Using the ground’s natural insulation, these buildings preserved the perishables kept in them.
