Loretto was founded in 1799 by the prince-priest Demetrius Gallitzin, who began the first school in the area here in 1800; that school was a forerunner of St. Francis College, chartered in 1858. It became a Catholic cultural center, and Charles M. Schwab, the steel king, had his home here.
