On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, a vibrant blue sky framed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, the tallest buildings in New York City and centerpieces of the skyline, as 40,000 people began their work day ordinarily before American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower and dark smoke filled the sky. Seventeen minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175 flew into the South Tower. Within another hour, American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, PA, United Airlines Flight 93 crashed to the ground, unsuccessful in reaching its targeted destination. In a morning's time, America changed forever. In 2012, Washington Township acquired a 4-foot, 1088-pound steel I-beam from the World Trade Center, limestone from the Pentagon, and rock from Shanksville for a 9-11 tribute.
