Welcome Creek Wilderness, established by Congress in 1978 within western Montana’s Lolo National Forest, protects the northern Sapphire Mountains as a rugged, lower-elevation forest landscape of steep breaks, dense lodgepole pine, old-growth stands, spruce, and Douglas-fir. It supports wildlife such as elk, mountain lion, bobcat, pine marten, mink, and weasel, and is managed under the 1964 Wilderness Act without roads, buildings, logging, mining, or motorized and mechanized travel. The area also preserves traces of an earlier gold-mining era that began after discovery in Welcome Creek in 1888, including scattered miners’ cabins and the site of outlaw Frank Brady’s death in a 1904 shootout.
