Salvation Mountain is a large outsider-art landmark in the California desert near Slab City, created by Leonard Knight as a brightly painted declaration of his message, “God is Love.” After an earlier hot-air balloon project failed in the 1970s, Knight began the mountain by 1984, rebuilt it after its collapse in 1989, and expanded it into a several-story adobe-and-straw environment that included the Hogan and an interior “museum.” For 27 years he lived simply at the site, giving free tours and maintaining it by hand. After injury and dementia ended his work, volunteers and Salvation Mountain, Inc. continued preserving this distinctive folk-art and community centerpiece.
