Essential to maintaining morality and morale, the Recreation Building was one of the busiest places on base, offering wholesome entertainment for airmen during their off-duty hours through amateur nights on Mondays, movies on Tuesdays and Thursdays, dances on Wednesdays, boxing on Fridays, and religious services and sing-alongs on Sundays. Saturday dances at the Civic Center downtown and regular athletic competitions between the airmen and local high school teams completed a recreational program meant to keep the men busy and out of trouble. Lewistown families, many with sons serving overseas, embraced the young airmen and donated furnishings for the Recreation Building's clubroom in response to the Air Force's call. On Wednesdays, young women of certified good moral character, escorted by senior U.S.O. chaperones, rode buses to the base for dances. Known elsewhere as Victory Belles, these patriotic dance partners in Lewistown called themselves the bomba-dears. Far from home, facing likely deployment into grave danger and eager for distraction, the airmen welcomed these visible expressions of community support and goodwill.
