Schooling in Lyons began in 1879-80 in a one-room building furnished with homemade desks and a blackboard painted on a wall. Around 1920-21, construction began on a new masonry school, and because the old building had to be moved for the project, classes were temporarily held in downtown businesses. The move into the new school was completed in December of 1922, bringing all 12 grades under one roof for the first time. In 1936, a stage and a six-foot addition were added to the gym, where the pep band and cheering section sat during basketball games, while fans used benches along the sides, the hallway above the court, and the stairway steps. In 1937, when the two-year high school in Crooks closed, Lyons took in its students along with eighth grade graduates from numerous rural schools. After the school's bonds were retired in 1945, remodeling projects were undertaken. In 1960, a separate gym with a regulation basketball court, bleacher seating, bathrooms, locker rooms, and a stage was built, and a later addition made room for the hot lunch program, wrestling, volleyball, a music room, and drama rehearsals. A special election on May 26, 1966 created the Tri-Valley Independent School District 153, and in 1967 Crooks, Lyons, Colton, and surrounding common school districts joined together. Classes continued at all three sites until October 1968, when volunteers moved everything to a new school between Colton and Lyons, placing all formal education at one site for the first time; the former school property northeast of 1st Avenue and 2nd Street was then sold and returned to private ownership. The first class in 1923 had 2 graduates, the last class in 1967 had 26, and 751 students graduated from Lyons High over 45 years as dedicated teachers, committed staff, involved families, and enthusiastic students shaped lives through education, activities, and lasting friendships.
