Col. Elias J. Unger, manager of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, built this house in the mid-1880s, where he had a commanding view of the club's lake and dam. On May 31, 1889, he supervised laborers in a desperate attempt to save the dam, but after the waters defeated their efforts, he trudged back up the hill to his house and collapsed as the flood wave roared toward Johnstown. Unger recalled that after heavy rain overnight, he found the water high in the morning and rising an inch every 10 minutes. The aging house and property were added to Johnstown Flood National Memorial in 1981 to preserve the historic scene. After more than a decade of abandonment, most of the house was saved and returned to its 1889 appearance, and restoration was completed in 1989, 100 years after the great flood.
