The Atlantic Coastal Highway through Georgia ran 136 miles from the South Carolina line to the Florida line, crossing Chatham, Bryan, Liberty, McIntosh, Glynn, and Camden Counties. Its earliest work dated to 1735, when the road from Savannah to Darien, probably the first road in Georgia, was laid out with the assistance of Tomochichi, the Mico of the Yamacraws. Paving through Chatham County was completed in 1921, and the Savannah River bridge was completed in August 1925. Construction from the Chatham-Bryan county line to the Florida line was financed with state and federal funds and a $900,000 bond issue of the Coastal Highway District. Under the leadership of Harvey Granger, chairman of the Coastal Highway Commission, the Coastal Highway District's construction program began in August 1924 and was completed in October 1927.
