The Iron Horse Regional Trail is a multi-use path in California’s East Bay built along much of a former Southern Pacific Railroad corridor established in 1891 and abandoned in 1977. Preserved by Alameda and Contra Costa counties and first established as a trail in 1986, it runs through several East Bay communities and is planned to stretch from Livermore to Suisun Bay for more than 40 miles. Designed for both recreation and everyday travel, it links with BART stations, includes bridges over major roads, and remains a significant transportation corridor. Despite piecemeal development in Pleasanton and early opposition, it now carries about one million trips each year.
