Pioneer Memorial Museum in Salt Lake City serves as both a public museum and the headquarters of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, preserving extensive collections on Mormon pioneers and early Utah. Its thousands of artifacts focus on the period before the first transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869 and include Brigham Young’s wagon, the original eagle from Eagle Gate, and a United States Army supply wagon from the Utah War. Designed by Lorenzo Snow Young to echo the lost Salt Lake Theatre, the building opened in 1950 after years of controversy and legal challenges and remains a major repository of Utah’s pioneer material culture.
