Fort Gilmer stood to the right of this road and was successfully defended against Federal assaults, remaining in Confederate hands until the eve of the evacuation of Richmond. Kershaw's Division, the last Confederate infantry to leave the Richmond line, abandoned Fort Gilmer at 3 A.M., April 3, 1865.
