Pine Hill, a low wooded summit in Bourne, Massachusetts, rises 306 feet and is the highest point in Barnstable County and on Cape Cod. Part of the Buzzards Bay Moraine, it was formed more than 10,000 years ago as glaciers retreated, leaving the sandy soil, bouldery till, pitch pine, and hummocky terrain typical of the Cape. Known as a prominent feature by 1874, it later became part of the Massachusetts Military Reservation as the surrounding land took on a military role in the early 20th century. Though largely undeveloped, it remains on an active military installation, so access is restricted and supervised.
