In Highland, a park was created to honor all who served and protected their country, including those who gave their lives for their community and country. The effort grew from Mayor Joseph R. Michaelis' vision and was carried out jointly by Highland American Legion Post 439 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5694, with important support from the City of Highland, Parks and Recreation, and local businesses. Those named among the fallen are Leroy Iten, William F. Metzger, Elmer Braundmeier, Neal Hilon Rood, Delmar F. Kuhn, Leevern C. Heim, Robert Fischer, Walter W. Maden, Jr., David McCain, Eugene F. Seifried, William F. Barrett, Jr., Leo Erwin Kauhl, Jerome A. Korte, Delmar M. Schauster, Paul E. Siegrist, William A. Neudecker, and Herbert A. Frey.
