Five and one-quarter miles southeast stood the town of Nickajack, or Anikusatiyi, which occupied the space between the river and the cave and contained a storehouse for plunder in the cave. Ore's force destroyed the town on September 14, 1794. During the War Between the States, the Confederacy also used the cave as a source of saltpeter.
