Admiral Raymond A. Spruance was an exemplary naval combat commander in World War Two whose leadership was associated with the American victories of Midway, the Marshalls, the Philippine Sea, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He later achieved further distinction in diplomacy as ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines from 1952-1955. Regarded as a quiet warrior, he served his country effectively at the highest levels, and his career stood as an example and challenge to service personnel and diplomats alike.
