In 1965, Dr. Ray Davis installed a 100,000-gallon cylindrical tank at Homestake Mine's 4850 Level for a neutrino experiment that for three decades opened new windows into the workings of the universe and changed the way the world was perceived. Built and moved in segments down the Yates shaft to the 4850 Level, the tank was reassembled underground, reflecting the unique challenges of constructing something of that size in an underground environment. In 2002, Davis received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research into neutrinos.
