Columbine–Hondo Wilderness is a 44,698-acre protected area in the Carson National Forest of northern New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Added to the National Wilderness Preservation System on December 19, 2014, it preserves the headwaters of the Rio Hondo and Red River in rugged high country between the Wheeler Peak and Latir Peak wilderness areas. Its elevations range from 7,861 feet to 12,710 feet at Gold Hill, with Lobo Peak and Flag Mountain also rising near timberline. The landscape includes several southern Rocky Mountain ecological zones, from ponderosa pine and pinyon woodlands to mixed conifer, aspen, spruce-fir forest, and alpine tundra.
