The Cornfield Bomber was a Convair F-106 Delta Dart that survived one of the strangest incidents in U.S. Air Force history. During a training flight over Montana on February 2, 1970, the jet went into a flat spin and its pilot, First Lieutenant Gary Foust, ejected after recovery efforts failed. Once pilotless, the aircraft unexpectedly stabilized, descended, and belly-landed in a snowy field near Big Sandy with only minor damage. Repaired and returned to service, it later flew again with Foust aboard. Retired in 1986, it is preserved at the National Museum of the United States Air Force as a rare jet fighter to survive an unpiloted landing.
