In 1894, under the leadership of Rev. J.F. Sundell, a group of Lake Mary’s founding fathers formed a community church, gathered signatures from other early residents, and secured approval from the South Florida Presbytery in Lakeland, Florida, for affiliation with the Presbyterian Church on October 10, 1894. Over the next 30 years, the church served the community as both a place of worship and a meeting place for many social events, open to residents of all faiths and denominations. On December 15, 1927, under the guidance of the Reverend James Thompson, members began planning a building, and on December 26, 1927, more than fifty volunteers started construction on the structure that stands on the original site. With credit for materials, generous monetary donations, and hundreds of volunteer hours, the building was completed over two and one half years, and members held services there even before its completion and dedication on March 30, 1930. The church housed a bell heard throughout the community that served as an air raid signal during World War II and was also used to call volunteer firemen. After a fire gutted the interior in November 1972, volunteers rebuilt the church, services resumed in the new sanctuary in July 1973, and Covenant Presbyterian Church united with the Lake Mary church in 1987.
