Built in 1888 on Gas Street in Concord, New Hampshire, the Concord Gas Light Company Gasholder House was constructed to store manufactured lighting gas as the city’s earlier facilities became too small. This circular brick industrial building is an unusually intact survivor, believed to be the only gasholder house of its kind in the United States with its enclosed gas containment unit still essentially intact. Inside, a massive concrete tank held a metal gasholder that rose and fell with demand. After Concord’s gasholders went out of use in 1952, the building endured as a rare example of urban utility history and became the focus of major preservation efforts in the 2010s and 2020s.
