After the fire, the area around the Metz depot of the Detroit & Mackinac Railway showed workers digging where the depot had stood, steps at the front of "Big John" Nowicki's Hotel and Saloon on the far right, railroad cars on the tracks to the left, and scattered burnt logs that remained from large stacks awaiting shipment by train to sawmills. In the background, relief shacks built by Detroit & Mackinac Railway construction workers housed survivors of the fire who had lost their homes.
