Gloss Mountain State Park in Major County near Fairview preserves part of Oklahoma’s Glass Mountains as a year-round day-use park focused on striking scenery, geology, and wildlife. Its glossy-looking selenite gypsum helps explain the “Glass” or “Gloss” name, and trails lead to Cathedral Mountain, across the mesa, and to broad valley views toward Lone Peak Mountain. With simple facilities for hiking and picnicking but no overnight accommodations, the park developed gradually after Oklahoma and the Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund purchased 640 acres in 1977. Since 1997, a partnership among the state, Fairview residents, and a conservancy has maintained and operated the site.
