Reuben E. Fenton was born July 4, 1819, and died Aug. 25, 1885. He served as Town of Carroll Supervisor from 1846 to 1852, was a Member of Congress in 1852 and from 1856 to 1865, was Governor of New York from 1865 to 1869, and served as a U.S. Senator from 1869 to 1875. He was known as "The Soldier's Friend."
