Col. Jacob Klock's home was the meeting place of the Tryon County Vigilance Committee on June 16, 1775, and July 10-11, 1775, and of the first and second town meetings of St. Johnsville. The Battle of Klocks Field on Oct. 19, 1780, took place on the flats to the west. On the knoll to the right stood the first church, built about 1720, and the burial place of Rev. John Dysslin, who died in 1813, of pioneers Shepherd Cox, Hendrick Klock, Christian Nellis, Sr., and of Revolutionary figures Col. Jacob Klock, George Klock, Sr., Joseph H. Klock, and family. Five hundred feet farther on stood tollgate No. 8, demolished in 1890.
