Samuel Wolfenberger, an early land grantee in this area, was of Dutch descent and was born in Virginia. He came to Texas, then part of Mexico, in 1831 as a colonist of Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas," and received a Spanish league of land, 4,444 acres, here. Active in the Texas Revolution, he took part in the storming of Bexar in 1835 and served with Robert Coleman's Rangers in 1836. He lived in Bastrop for many years, joined the effort to promote the town as capital of the Republic in 1839, was collector that same year, and served as alderman from 1845 to 1847. He married Caroline Fliesart and had 7 children. His grave is located 1 mi. E.
