Seiwa-en is a fourteen-acre Japanese strolling garden within the Missouri Botanical Garden in Saint Louis, Missouri, created to be experienced by moving through its landscape. Planned beginning in 1972 and dedicated in May 1977, it was designed by Dr. Koichi Kawana, whose work helped shape traditional Japanese gardens in the United States through the use of local and native plants. His largest work, Seiwa-en includes a large lake, islands, bridges, carp, traditional buildings, dry gravel landscapes, and seasonal plantings such as spring-flowering cherry trees. A Japanese maple given by the Emperor of Japan underscores its significance as both a major garden composition and a cultural link.
