Canal Place is a 58.1-acre heritage area in Cumberland, Maryland, at the western end of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, where the city’s canal, rail, and military history meet. Centered on the historic Western Maryland Railway Station, it includes museum exhibits, public grounds, canal interpretation, and access to George Washington’s Headquarters at Fort Cumberland. Visitors can explore interactive displays on canal construction and working life, tour The Cumberland, a full-size replica canal boat, and ride excursions on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Owned and managed by a Maryland state agency created in 1993, it serves as a gateway to Cumberland’s historic waterfront.
