Price Creek Light near Southport was one of two range lights that helped guide ships up the lower Cape Fear River toward Wilmington, first lit in 1851 as part of a federal navigation improvement. The surviving light was a conical brick tower built by Wilmington brickmasons John C. Wood and Robert B. Wood, later equipped with a Fresnel lens. During the Civil War, lower Cape Fear lights were extinguished, though the site also served the Confederacy as a signal station. Damaged in the war and never relit, the tower was later altered and repaired. It survives with the keeper’s house foundation on the riverbank in private ownership.
