Around 1890, the 200 block of Lafayette Street in Greenville was bustling with horse and carriage traffic, with banners hanging overhead, possibly for a celebration. Lafayette Street remained a dirt street until 1910, when it was first paved with bricks. A later view of the same 200 block from the 1940s shows many buildings constructed in the 1870s and 1880s for early Greenville businessmen such as J.J. Shearer, E.F. Grabill, John Lewis, and M.H. Norton, who were influential in many aspects of Greenville's development. Greenville's first movie house, the Marguerite Vaudette, was located in the First State Bank Building, built in 1870. After changes in ownership and management, the theater's name changed several times, and in 1913 the Favorite Theater nickelodeon at 301 South Lafayette Street operated on the first floor and showed motion pictures for 5 cents admission.
