On the afternoon of October 7, 1780, gathering patriot forces circled the base of Kings Mountain and climbed to a rock-strewn ridge line defended by more than 1,000 American loyalists under the command of British officer Major Patrick Ferguson. The fighting, carried on sharply from tree to tree, lasted only one hour. By the end, Ferguson was dead, and British hopes for a quick victory in the South were dead as well.
