The monument is dedicated to the memory of Confederate soldiers from Gadsden County, Florida, who died in the defense of their country. It includes the lines, "On fame's eternal camping ground their silent tents are spread and glory guards with solemn round the bivouac of the dead." It was erected by the Ladies of the Memorial Association of Gadsden County, Florida, on April 26, 1884, and bears the inscriptions "C.S.A.," "Esto perpetua," translated as "Let it be eternal," and "Our Fallen Heroes."
