Around 1840, John Feaster, a noted landowner of the area, established an academy at this site for the education of female and male students. By 1842, both the academy building and a boarding house, or dormitory, had been erected. Feaster appointed his sons Andrew, Jacob, and John M. Feaster as trustees.
