During the Revolutionary War, the printed word was the primary means of communication, and with the Continental Congress in York the need for a printing press grew urgent. In 1777, the Philadelphia firm of Hall & Sellers moved their press, once owned by Benjamin Franklin, to York, the capital. Printed there were continental currency, the Proclamation of the First Thanksgiving, the Journals of Congress, the Pennsylvania Gazette, and other congressional documents.
