The Continental Congress met in York, Pennsylvania, from September 30, 1777 to June 27, 1778. During the British Army's occupation of Philadelphia, its sessions were held in the courthouse, and the Articles of Confederation of the Colonies were adopted here on November 15, 1777. The building stood near the center of the square, was built in 1756, and was removed in 1841. Adjoining it on the east was the State House, built in 1793 and torn down in 1840.
