Army Camp contains one of the few places in West Virginia where certain rare plants grow. Limiting the cutting of vegetation to once a year helps ensure the long-term health of these plants. Since 1985, researchers have identified 24 state rare plant species at Army Camp, including six classified as critically imperiled and found in fewer than five places in West Virginia, and 13 more considered very rare and imperiled. The area also has exceptionally high plant diversity, with 358 species, representing 14% of all plant species found in West Virginia and 25% of those found in the New River Gorge. Flooding along the New River regularly removes larger woody vegetation and leaves an open canopy, and flowers and grasses adapted to this flooding flourish there. Avoiding cutting or mowing helps keep their habitat intact.
