Henderson's Dairy closed in 1942 when war called Jerry Henderson away, and after he returned home from World War II in 1945 he built and opened the Standard Service Station. The small family-owned business offered full-service gasoline for 16.9 cents per gallon, had a lube room for minor repairs, and sold products such as spark plugs and tires. Inside, travelers and townspeople could buy a Beich's Whiz, called "the best candy bar there is," and ice-cold six-ounce bottles of Coca-Cola for a nickle each. After 16 years of dependable service, the station closed in 1963 because of increased competition and additional farming responsibilities, and it had been a frequent stopping place that added to the character of Historic Route 66.
