The original Route 66 here was commissioned in 1926 as a 16-foot-wide hard road constructed from Portland cement. The road immediately in front is the upgraded 1954 Route 66 alignment, and 3.5 miles of its original southbound lanes have been preserved and converted into a linear Parkway. Dead Man's Curve lies directly across the road to the right, and Interstate 55 was built through the Towanda area in 1977.
