Humbug Mountain is a prominent coastal headland on southern Oregon’s Pacific shore, rising 1,756 feet directly from the ocean within Humbug Mountain State Park. Formed about 130 million years ago in the early Cretaceous through continental collisions, it preserves visible granite and sandstone outcrops near the summit and supports an old-growth temperate rainforest on its steep slopes. Known to the Tututni as Me-tus, it was later called Sugarloaf Mountain and then Tichenor’s Humbug after an 1851 exploring party became lost. Today it is a center for hiking, camping, wildlife watching, and access to beach, forest, and marine habitats.
