After their forced removal by U.S. and Indiana officials from near Plymouth, Indiana, more than 800 Potawatomi encamped at Sidney while being marched to eastern Kansas. Two people died at Sidney, including a child, and a total of 39 Potawatomi died en route during the tragic journey that became known as the Trail of Death.
