UL Bend National Wildlife Refuge is a fifty-six-thousand-forty-eight-acre protected area in central Montana along the Missouri River and Fort Peck Reservoir, surrounded on three sides by the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. Shaped by the rugged Missouri River Breaks, it includes the remote UL Bend Wilderness, where access is only by foot or horseback. Cottonwood-lined riverbanks and broken prairie support bighorn sheep, elk, moose, bears, eagles, prairie dogs, and other wildlife. The refuge has been important to black-footed ferret restoration since reintroductions in the 1990s, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition also passed through this notably isolated landscape.
