On the night of October 25, 1780, Col. Francis Marion and 150 men surprised and completely routed 200 Tories under Col. Samuel Tynes near here. Marion's forces suffered no casualties. The dispersion of Tynes's troops made Lord Cornwallis apprehensive of losing British supplies on the Santee River.
