The Valle family, the first recorded Latino family in Garland, lived in a one-story home on West Avenue C. Manuel Valle, born in 1898, was a Mexican immigrant who fought alongside Pancho Villa and moved to Texas following the Mexican Revolution. He worked at the Dieterich Brothers' Dairy in El Paso, where he met and married Maria Martinez, who was born in 1902. When the company expanded operations to Garland in 1928, Manuel and Maria transferred there. They raised eight children, six boys and two girls, and in 1944 purchased a home on West Avenue C, adding a bedroom, kitchen, and closet to fit their large family. Manuel and Maria emphasized education, and all eight children graduated from Garland High School, where they excelled in academics and sports. The family also gave back to the community despite limited means and valued service to their community and country. After high school, all six Valle sons served in the military in the U.S. Army, Army Air Corps, Marines, and Air Force, fighting in conflicts from World War II through the Korean and Vietnam wars, with the youngest serving in Middle East conflicts. The eldest daughter helped build planes during World War II, and both daughters married military men. Garland Independent School District later renamed an administration building the Manuel and Maria Valle Student Services Center. As Garland's Latino population grew to more than 40 percent by 2020, the Valles' legacy endured for their family and future Latino residents.
